Happy Mother's Day to Me! I love this. My Mom died a couple of years ago. When I watch this I think of her! Bea always touched my heart-. The characters she played from Maude to Dorothy were my Mom, Aunts and Both my Grandmas all rolled into one -Lol! I laughed and cried today. I miss All of them.

This sums up the golden girls appeal in one short clip. Poignancy and warmth perfectly balanced with razor sharp comedy. Honestly this clip kills me every time. Bea’s vulnerability in this moment then the confidence kicking in ❤️

I love this scene so much, not just because Bea Arthur is amazing but just because of how sweet this scene is when you think about it. This man just invited this woman who he's never met before to sing just so she'll feel more comfortable and confident in her surroundings. It's just wonderful.
Michaela Bauer (10 months ago)
The pianist is playing I Wanna Be Loved By You... that’s a fun little bit of foreshadowing 😃
Euodia Percy (10 months ago)
Cried for no reason. Perhaps it's the deliverance she made with words and her soulful voice

Db is also a good key for me to sing this song in.

It's funny cause I'm a guy but Db is too low for me. I'm a tenor and prefer Gb or higher

One of the best moments from the show. Dorothy was alone a lot in the series and she hated how Stan left her for another woman. Maybe she’s thinking of him when she sang this? Stan was always so mean to her and lied and she still loved him regardless but couldn’t fully take him back.

I love the ensuing scene where Blanche admits that she finds herself jealous of Dorothy for the first time... A humble Blanche tells Dorothy why all the the men were swooning for her- because when she is up there singing, she's beautiful, she simply glows.

i look at dorothy and it gives me so much comfort to know that if i grow old i would still be the same old bitter peron, id prefer being on my own, id be comfortable with who i am no matter what the world thinks of me or how manly i appear to most people... there are times when i try to change but if id grow old to be as secure as her i wouldnt change a thing!

She definitely is the GG closest in personality to me: shy, poor self-image, not usually the most popular person in the room...but who can shoot one-liners like Rambo taking out a helicopter.

Side note: Anybody else find Bea Arthur quite attractive in season 7? She hit her physical peak on that show in the final season, even usurping Blanche in my opinion.
DeshaunX (11 months ago)
Jason Gibson I saw Bea live in 2002 and she sounded phenomenal. Sure, her voice had aged, but she sang beautifully. And YES she was gorgeous from season 5 onward. I think all of the characters really settled into themselves around season 5-- both the writers and the actors.

I want to cry for my beloved Bea, when I see her in season seven. She gained weight and was starting to lose her Maude voice that she used in the earlier seasons. I think she left the show also for health reasons too. But her hair and face was also very beautiful this season. In the last episode Dorthy is given lots of love dignity. Her son Mathew admits in magazine interviews, that Bea's voice was aging and she felt it time to bring the show to a close.

I like this episode becasue it's great to see Bea Arthur sing and bring her broadway background to this episode.  Bea Arthur was on Broadway before the Golden Girls and had enormous success. I loved how Dorothy getting all the attention made Blanche insecure. But unfortunately this episode does have a very weird storyline involving Sophia wanting to have a fake wake.  I remember seeing this episode and thinking the writer who came up with that storyline about having a fake wake was very sick in the head.  I mean who on earth would have a wake for themselves while they are still alive.  Whoever came up with that I think was very sick in the head.
SUGAR XYLER ! (3 years ago)
+raschica ` Well I don't go to funerals and won't have one myself. I think they are a waste of money. I respect people while they're still alive. And I did like the fake wake scene, was humorous.
joeb267382 (3 years ago)
+TravelinBand747 You're right, it was a cheap plot trick. Plus were blanche and Sophia so naive and clueless not to realize that having Rose make out the invitations for the fake wake was the worst idea.
TravelinBand747 (3 years ago)
+joeb267382 The whole "living wake" story line was silly. Dorothy was even written out of it altogether because she was against it and said she wouldn't pay for it. It seemed like a cheap plot trick just to get Rose to do something stupid (not informing people that Sophia was still alive, of course, in this case).
raschica (3 years ago)
I don't think it's weird for a writer to think of that as a storyline. Knowing Sophia's personality (I'm an avid Golden Girls fan), this is something that she would do. Did her friends think it was weird when they discovered she was alive? Yes! This was the point. India.Arie has a song named "Flowers." It's basically saying to not wait until someone is dead to give recognition to them and show love to them (give them flowers). Sophia took that into her own hands and gave her loved ones the opportunity to give their flowers to her now. I actually think a lot of people think about "Who will come to my funeral? What will people say about me?" Sophia wanted to actually know! She's a hoot!
joeb267382 (3 years ago)
+raschica You don't think that's really weird? Having a wake while you are still alive. If someone got an invitation for a fake wake they would think it was bizarre. The writer NEVER should have gone with that storyline. The writer could have maybe thought of "what would happe if someone had a fake wake?" But should have thought to himself "that is just way too weird." The wome on this show like Bea Arthur and Rue McClanahan love to gloat about how great the writing was on this show but that's a lot of nonsense. The writing on Maude was far superior to this. Also the writing Betty White worked with on Mary Tyler Moore was also much better.

What'll I do? Db is good for me.
T Hester (4 years ago)
Really, a perfect setting for this sort of song--simple, unadorned performance and accompaniment.  Sentimental songs like these, I think, are easily made cloying by over-production.  The maturity of an older voice can add weight to a song, as well.  It's a pity there aren't more musical treatments like this.
