Retail sales in Japan have risen for the first time since the earthquake and tsunami hit the country in March.
According to the latest official data, retail sales rose 1.1% in June from a year earlier, indicating that the economy is beginning to recover.

Compared with the previous month, retail sales rose by 2.9%.
Analysts said the data indicated that things were starting to return to normal in Japan.
“You should expect a bounce back to where things were before the earthquake and tsunami struck,” said Richard Jerram of Bank of Singapore.

The central bank raised the reserve requirement on deposits and deposit substitutes of all banks and non-banks with quasi-banking functions by one percentage point, effective from August 5. This followed a similar hike in June.
The Monetary Board emphasized that the risks around the inflation forecasts remain skewed to the upside, suggesting a need for caution in the monetary policy stance.

Some of us would probably have no problem doing this – my husband and I had access to each others’ accounts and regularly updated our joint finances long before we were married, so putting our money into amon pot (or pots) didn’t seem like a huge step.
