– New claims for unemployment insurance in the U.S. jumped in the week ended June 18th, according to figures released Thursday by the Labor Department, with the data adding to recent concerns about the labor market.
On a seasonally adjusted basis, the new level of initial unemployment claims came in at 429,000, somewhat higher than the 415,000 most economists had predicted.
Furthermore, the new claims levels were 9,000 higher than the previous week’s revised level of 420,000, which was also higher than the initial estimates of 414,000.
The total number of people on the unemployment rolls, a figure formally known as continuing claims, decreased slightly for the week ended June 11th, falling by 1,000 to 3.697 million from the previous week’s revised level of 3.698 million.
The level of continuing claims is somewhat higher than the 3.68 million most economists had predicted, and the drop reflects a revision from initial estimates for the previous week that had reported 3.675 million continuing claims.
